What Is a Request for Proposal (RFP)?

This is a UK procurement term. A document a buyer issues to invite detailed proposals for a specific product or service, once it has settled on scope and requirements.

How is an RFP different from an RFQ?

An RFP invites detailed proposals that explain how the supplier would meet the requirement. An RFQ asks only for prices for a clearly defined requirement.

When do buyers use an RFP?

When the solution is not fully defined and the buyer wants to compare different approaches, not just prices.

What makes a strong RFP response?

A clear understanding of the buyer's needs, a specific solution, evidence from similar work and pricing that matches the proposed approach.
