What Is Sustainable Procurement?

Sustainable procurement means taking environmental, social and economic considerations into account when buying, through the requirements, award criteria and contract terms used in a procurement.

How is sustainability built into a procurement?

Through minimum requirements in the specification, award criteria that score environmental or social performance, and contract terms on how the contract is to be performed.

Can a buyer require sustainability?

Yes, as long as the requirements are linked to the subject matter of the contract and are proportionate. General corporate policies unrelated to the contract cannot be required.

What should suppliers prepare?

Evidence: certifications, environmental product declarations, emissions data and documented social measures. Unverified claims are not credited.
